Wednesday Bytes: Bluebird, Faction, UPN, Limelight, NTT

A quick look at some interesting items at mid-week:

Bluebird Network is planning an underground expansion. The INDATEL member recently revealed plans to build out more of a data center it bought from the city of Springfield, Missouri last year. It happens to be located 85 feet below ground in an operational mine, and Bluebird intends to use it as an interconnection-focused facility. They’ll be adding 16,000 square feet in three phases, finishing up in mid-2017 or so.

The channel-focused IaaS provider Faction has picked up a key cloud customer. Through its partner CDW, they have won a contract with Preferred Hotels & Resorts, which has moved its production and backup environments into a Faction-powered private cloud. Key to the deal was the migration plan provided by Faction.

Unite Private Networks revealed some traction in the world of small cells. They said yesterday that they’ve now deployed 100 small cell sites in Iowa as part of a state-wide buildout for a major wireless carrier. That expansion will see 1,500 new route miles added to their network this year, giving them a network in the state that will rival what they’ve got on the other side of the Missouri River in Nebraska.

In the CDN world, Limelight Networks says it has picked up some travel business. The European-based online travel company eDreams Odigeo has selected their Orchestrate Delivery service for its various websites. The upgrade replaces an internal platform that just wasn’t keeping up with the company’s global expansion.

Meanwhile, NTT added yet another dimension to its cloud portfolio.  They launched Multi-Cloud Connect, which as the name promises connects to multiple clouds, in this case to Amazon AWS and Microsoft Azure.  Initially those connections will be made in Tokyo, with London to follow later this year. It’s on the company’s Arcstar MPLS backbone with connection speeds up to a gigabit, and complements the company’s in-house cloud efforts.
