Colo Bytes: IO, QTS, Box, GCX, CyrusOne

Here’s a quick rundown of some colo and cloud news from the week so far:

Stretching out further from its Phoenix origins, the data center services company IO has crossed the Atlantic. They formally launched in the UK yesterday with a new modular data center facility in Slough. Goldman Sachs has signed on as an anchor customer, just as they did for the Singapore expansion two years ago. The modules will come from BASELAYER, which IO recently spun off as a separate company.

QTS has completed the acquisition of Carpathia Hosting. The $326M deal had just been announced six weeks ago, and gives QTS a bigger hybrid cloud and managed hosting business that it will aim at both the enterprise and federal markets. Carpathia’s CEO Peter Weber has joined QTS as Chief Product Officer, but the rest of the integration will be a project for the next year or so I’m sure.

Box Inc. is partnering up with NTT Communications to jointly launch a Box over VPN product.  The relationship will let Box deliver their cloud storage and collaboration services over NTT’s infrastructure, while it let’s NTT’s Arcstar division enhance its overall enterprise cloud offerings.

Global Cloud Xchange and Equinix have announced an interconnect deal.  GCX will be offering direct connectivity to the Equinix Cloud Exchange in six major locations worldwide.  Equinix’s Cloud Exchange has quickly gained traction over the past year to be sure, or at least it seems like a week doesn’t go by without another partner or customer announcement.

And CyrusOne has been finding that better security systems are also good for efficiency. After reaching a milestone of 25,000 ID badge scans with its RapidEntry system, they have eliminated hard copy entry forms entirely. Data centers needing paper to keep track of things does carry a bit of irony with it, so this seems like a good thing.
