Accelerating Euro Expansion, Zayo Taps Interxion

March 19th, 2015 by · 1 Comment

Zayo announced an agreement with Interxion this morning, through which they will expand their fiber network into Interxion Dublin. The move takes advantage of the dark fiber route to Ireland they acquired in the deal for Geo a little less than a year ago, and which they just lit up just last month.

More interesting is the rest of the wording, which described Interxion Dublin as the first site in Zayo’s newly expanded European longhaul network, an ongoing project in the first half of this year. Meanwhile, the title of the PR suggests further expansion in Ireland itself. Sounds like they’ve got several prongs to their expansion plans, and I’ll bet we hear about more Interxion facilities elsewhere coming on-net as well.

With the purchase of AboveNet, Zayo gained a metro beachhead in London with a longhaul ring over to France, Germany, and the Netherlands. With the Geo and Neo deals it expanded that beachhead to cover Paris and the rest of the UK plus a link to Ireland. Some metro fiber and additional nodes in Dublin and then perhaps to other Irish cities are an obvious next step for a company with as many expansion projects as Zayo.

As there hasn’t been another big deal though, a further longhaul expansion into new European markets probably indicates they’ve done a deal (or are planning to do one) for some dark fiber to expand deeper into Western Europe. But sooner or later they’ll find something inorganic to go with it, as there are too many potential consolidation opportunities at hand for any other future to be likely.

For its part, Interxion is currently planning an inorganic expansion of its own via a merger with rival Telecity.
