Friday Bytes: DE-CIX, AMS-IX, Viawest, WOW!

February 6th, 2015 by · 2 Comments

For this Friday roundup we have two items from the internet exchanges, one from the cloud, and one from the channel:

DE-CIX North America has finally, formally signed on with the Open-IX movement. They signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the association and begun the certification process for DE-CIX New York. The two were already largely aligned in many ways, but the agreement smooths out a few wrinkles in the budding Euro-style IX market in the US. DE-CIX also appointed Akamai’s Steven Schecter to its Customer Advisory Board and has three new facilities coming soon to its NYC metro area IX network.

In other IX news from New York City, AMS-IX has added an important new node to its own internet exchange effort. They’ve partnered with Telx, adding a PoP at 111 8th Avenue and expanding their reach to four key buildings in Manhattan plus one over in New Jersey.  AMS-IX is also building nodes in Silicon Valley and Chicago.

Further west, ViaWest has a new outsourcing customer from the beverage industry. Colorado’s New Belgium Brewing is moving its critical IT operations into Viawest’s cloud. Viawest was bought by Canada’s Shaw Communications last year, but has kept its usual independent momentum since then.

And WOW! Business continued its offensive in the SME segment with the signing of a new channel partner. They’ve reached a supplier partner agreement with Intelisys, a national distributor of communications and technology services to businesses. WOW! is the 9th largest cable operator, but also has some 40,000 miles of local and regional network in the Southeast, Mid-Atlantic, and Midwest that it has been increasingly targeting at the business market.
