Wednesday Roundup: Global Capacity, UPN, Level 3, Juniper

I’m still at Metro Connect, heading home later today.  In the meantime here’s another set of quick-takes on recent news that is worth a look:

Global Capacity may be busy with the integration of Megapath’s wholesale network division, but today they unveiled a big new feature for their One Marketplace offering. It’s a Network Builder app, which takes the complexity of network design and lets one point and click their way through an visual interface that looks a bit like shopping at Amazon to me — with maps of course. The technology is aimed at empowering more enterprises when it comes to designing and implementing their own WAN.

Unite Private Networks is making progress on its project out in Iowa. Yesterday they announced the completion of phase 1, bringing the initial fiber-to-the-tower sites online. They expect the full 700 mile buildout to be complete in December, connecting the major metro areas of central and eastern Iowa via a diverse ring.

Level 3 is once again providing its broadcast video services to the Super Bowl. Their Vyvx VenueNet+ will help power the efforts of both the NFL and NBC Sports this weekend, the 26th consecutive year that they (or more specifically their Vyvx division) have won this contract. That means some 3,000 hours of video content that will be acquired, encoded, and transported, although any one of us will only see a small fraction of that – else it would take the better part of a year just to watch it all.

And Juniper’s efforts in 2014 to streamline the business bore some juicy fruit in Q4.  The vendor’s fourth quarter earnings came in ahead of expectations yesterday afternoon, with its adjusted profit of $0.41 per share some ten cents above expectations.  Revenues were down, but also not as far as feared.  Hence, the stock is looking at a good day today.
