TGIF and 13 shopping days left before Christmas.  Here’s a quick look at news from across the space and around the world before you head home:

CenturyLink has struck again with the acquisition of Cognilytics. Cognilytics specializes in ‘Big Data’ and predictive analytics, and will add yet another dimension to CenturyLink’s overall cloud and IT capabilities. CEO Gary Gauba will join CenturyLink and lead the new division.  I’ve always been a bit skeptical about Big Data’s imminent arrival, but it’ll get here in force sooner or later.

FirstLight Fiber has won an expanded relationship with the University of Vermont. UVM is upgrading to 10G, thanks in part to research grants they have received from the North East Cyberinfrastructure Consortium. Among other things, the upgrade includes a dozen 10G waves between UVM and both Albany and Dartmouth over to the east in New Hampshire.

EarthLink is on the move in Manhattan this winter. The managed network and cloud services provider has established a presence at Sabey’s Intergate.Manhattan facility at 375 Pearl, where it will also have access to both AMS-IX and DE-CIX. They have also expanded their NYC ring to bring that facility, 85 10th, 325 Hudson, 32 Ave of Americas, and 111 8th Ave on-net via dual entrances.

Pacnet picked up a deal with Swizerland-based goFLUENT, which specializes in spreading Business English around the world. goFLUENT is looking to expand its network footprint in the APAC region and deeper into China, and Pacnet will be providing theym with hardware-as-a-service, managed firewall, and dedicated internet access.

And also on the international front, Hilti has picked Orange Business Services for global video conferencing. Liechtenstein’s Hilti Group supplies the construction industry with various tools and services, employing some 200,000 across 120 countries. In other words just the right sort of customer for Orange, which differentiates itself to a large extent by its fully global reach and focus on multinational enterprises with big network needs that need outsourcing.
