Zayo, Netflix Team Up for new Florida Internet Exchange

Two of the most dynamic insurgents in the bandwidth world have teamed up to start a new internet exchange down in southern Florida. The fiber builder and operator Zayo and the streaming giant Netflix, along with Host.net and CloudFlare, have launched FL-IX and are actively looking for more peers to sign on.

The core node will be at zColo’s facility at 36 NE 2nd Street in Miami, where Zayo will be providing the space, power, and underlying connectivity. From there the IX will initially availability in the facilities of Telx, Equinix, and Colohouse at the same address, NOTA a few blocks over, and Host.net’s locations in Boca Raton and Ft. Lauderdale.  Not on that list yet of course is Verizon Terremark’s NAP of the Americas.

I had wondered if Zayo’s zColo might find its way into the middle of a new exchange someplace.  There’s been a wave of new IX openings and expansions over the past few months, moving beyond the initial NYC and Virginia efforts we saw kick off last year about this time.  Many of those efforts have had European roots, but this one is of domestic origin.  The effort will be aiming for Open-IX certification, no big surprise given that Netflix’s involvement.  See our interview with Dave Temkin of both Open-IX and Netflix from over the summer.
