Thursday Bytes: Wilcon, CenturyLink, Global Capacity, ADVA, i2i

Here’s a quick rundown of some other news across the industry from this week:

In southern California, Wilcon says the integration of Wilshire Connection, IX2, and Freedom Dark Fiber Networks is now complete. The combination creates a regional infrastructure powerhouse that seems likely to be more aggressive than its predecessors were, and I expect we’ll be hearing a lot more from them in the coming quarters.

On the Federal front, CenturyLink won another small but high profile government contract in the DC metro area. They will be providing network, data, , and voice to the US Marine Corps Combat Development Command in Quantico, Virginia as well as the Marine Corps Barracks in Washington, DC itself. The deal is worth up to $8.5M over the next two years.

Global Capacity is now a bit more global.  This week they took their One Marketplace platform across the ocean to the UK, where they are now offering access to endpoints across the country.  The company has been expanding rapidly over the past year or so, adding both new PoPs as well as additional access providers to connect to.

The upgrade that Merit Network announced two weeks ago up in Michigan got some further detail this week.
The R&E network has deployed ADVA’s 100G Metro technology. They’ve used it to boost speeds on the key Detroit-Ann Arbor-Lansing-Chicago span of its network. That’s an 800km fiber route with no regeneration, the longest in the field for ADVA’s metro gear thus far.

And Bharti has upgraded the i2i cable between India and Singapore. They’ve deployed Ciena’s converged packet-optical and network management solutions with a 100G ROADM-based infrastructure. More capacity and better management of it certainly isn’t going to hurt anything.
