Level 3’s Vyvx Establishes South African Beachhead

September 11th, 2013 by · 10 Comments

The Vyvx division over at Level 3 Communications (NYSE:LVLT, news, filings) has added a PoP way down in Johannesburg, South Africa. They're responding to demand for video content both generated in and delivered to the country.  Telemedia is the first announced customer, gaining access to a global audience for its content.

Despite having the largest economy on the continent, South Africa's position at the southern tip of the least connected region on the planet has long limited its bandwidth options. But with all the new cables that have come online (or soon will) along both the eastern (SEACOM, EASSy) and western (WACS, GLO-1, ACE, Main One) coasts of Africa, they've been getting a lot closer in a virtual sense.

Hence, while they cite demand as the reason to expand to Johannesburg, I'm sure that opportunity was a piece of the puzzle as well. There are simply so many more pipes (and larger ones) available to transport the data, offering more pricing flexibility and diverse routing.
