Verizon’s Private IP Now In Equinix

June 14th, 2013 by · 1 Comment

Verizon (NYSE:VZ, news, filings) Enterprise Solutions has teamed up with Equinix (NASDAQ:EQIX, news, filings) to make its Private IP services available to a wider audience. Enterprise customers can now access the bandwidth from Equinix’s IBXs around the world.

Of course, the first thought that ran through my mind was “they weren’t in Equinix already?” After all, Equinix is a pretty big piece of the core of the entire carrier neutral data center sector — big enough that not having PoPs in at least a few of their facilities seems like a bit of a hole.  But of course Verizon already had connectivity to them, this is for their Private IP offering in particular which targets a more specialized customer type

Verizon’s Terremark division gives them a big footprint of their own in the carrier neutral datacenter sector, with their own cloud services capabilities. But as the cloud computing and SaaS sector starts to mature, it is becoming clear that walled gardens just won’t make the grade. More on-ramps that customers can rely on mean more business.

How is it different? What type of customer is it customized for?
