Service Provider M&A: UNSi to Acquire Airband

May 7th, 2013 by · 2 Comments

United Network Services, Inc, or UNSi, announced this morning that it has agreed to acquire Dallas-based Airband Communications. This isn’t consolidation of similar assets, but rather a merger of complementary technologies and capabilities. UNSi specializes in MPLS and managed services, while Airband focuses on fixed wireless access and VoIP services like SIP trunking and Hosted PBX.

But in addition to product depth and the revenue synergies they hope to generate, the deal will add significant breadth to UNSi’s footprint. The additional 12 core PoPs will boost their MPLS/Ethernet footprint to 29 in all, boosting the company’s network breadth — especially in the southern half of the country and those 16 fixed wireless markets.

It’s another step forward toward owning the network for UNSi, which last February bought IPNetzone to give it that national MPLS network footprint to work with in addition to its managed service capabilities.  But taking on fixed wireless and VoIP services will be a whole new challenge, and I’m curious where they will decide to move next.

The combined company will generate more than $60M in annual revenues and boast 160 employees. UNSI’s Francis D. John will stay on as President and CEO, while Airband’s Timothy Kinnear will become EVP and CFO. The deal is expected to close within 30 days.
