Network Roundup: Comcast, Level 3, XO, Hurricane Electric

April 17th, 2013 by · 2 Comments

Here’s a quick look at some network news from US-based operators this week, with contracts for Comcast Business and Level 3, a product move by XO, and an expansion by Hurricane Electric:

Comcast Business has won another large public metro Ethernet contract in the sports vertical. The Washington Nationals have picked their business Ethernet services to bring a 1Gbps fiber connection to Nationals Park. The additional bandwidth will support even more people and devices via WiFi than in the past. Hmmm, 1Gbps per house in KC, and 1Gbps per stadium in DC – I think they’ll be needing some more of those pipes before long…

Level 3 Communications (NYSE:LVLT, news, filings) has been named the exclusive network partner of the global healthcare conference TEDMED 2013. They’ll be providing both broadcast and CDN services for the event, which takes place this week at the Kennedy Center for Performing Arts in Washingto DC. Level 3 has also been supporting TED more generally of course, hosting its TED Talks videos.

XO says it has enhanced its hosted PBX solution with a BYOB option. No that last letter doesn’t stand for beer, but of course broadband. The new flexibility will let them serve a wider spectrum of multi-location businesses, in particular those with smaller branch offices served by a public internet connection.

Hurricane Electric has been expanding its footprint lately, and yestereday added yet another PoP. This time they’ve established a presence in Cologix’s Dallas INFOMART facility. Cologix just opened its 2nd data center at the Dallas location two months ago. Last week HE announced a 100G expansion with Zayo, and over the past 12 months has added new PoPs in New York City, Columbus, Milan, Vienna, and Vancouver (the last of which was also in a Cologix facility.
