Fiber M&A: Tech Valley to Acquire TelJet

April 2nd, 2013 by · 2 Comments

The Fiber M&A front has been relatively quiet so far in 2013, but this morning saw a bit of consolidation up in the northeast. Tech Valley Communications has agreed to acquire substantially all of the assets of Vermont-based TelJet Longhaul, LLC. Those assets include both a metro and regional fiber network and a 20,000 square foot data center.

The purchase will bring together two of the larger independent fiber assets in northern New England under one umbrella. After the deal closes, Tech Valley will have nearly 1,100 lit buildings acros 190,000 fiber miles across upstate New York, New Hampshire, Vermont, and Maine. While I don’t have detailed information, Teljet has a couple hundred route miles of fiber and perhaps a hundred on-net buildings. While the company is not well-known outside of northern New England, they have had a strong regional customer list including the University of Vermont, St. Michael’s College, Middlebury College, Champlain College, Vermont Public Television, Subatomic Digital, and Fletcher Allen Health Care.

Tech Valley Communications operates a substantial metro and regional network around Albany where most of those on-net buildings are, but they also bought SegTel back in 2011 giving them their New England presence. They did that with the help of the private equity group Riverside Partners, which acquired Tech Valley the year before that as a foray into metro fiber that they have been quietly following up on ever since.
