Zayo today said it has completed its second 100G deployment, bringing big bandwidth to its Chicago-Memphis route in the form of both wavelength and Ethernet sales. Their first 100G deployment was in the busy northeast corridor of course, between New York City and Washington DC.
In this case it’s not even an upgrade from 10G or 40G service, as this route had not previously even been lit. It’s clearly the top half of the unique dark fiber route between Chicago and New Orleans that they got in the 360networks deal. The upgrade went into service in mid-January, which coincides with the schedule described in Earthlink’s 10G rollout on the same route from last October.
360networks had never lit the route, but for Zayo it hooks up one of the first metro assets they ever bought, Memphis Networx, to the rest of their national footprint. I expect a similar deployment along the southern leg of the Mississippi can’t be too far off.
Zayo also mentioned the proximity to the assets it acquired in the USCarrier deal in the context of this upgrade. Those assets hook up to Nashville, suggesting that they may have additional plans for upgrades yet to come in the southeastern US to fill in a couple of the few remaining blank spots on their map.
