Metro Bytes: Zayo, Sunesys, Global Capacity, Birch

Time for a quick review of news items from the metro side of things:

Yesterday, Zayo became the latest fiber operator to build out its network to Mahwah in northeastern New Jersey, bringing its full suite of services to bear. There has been a parade of expansions to the NYSE data center there over the past year, and no doubt there are a few more yet in the works. Zayo’s New York/New Jersey metro footprint derives largely from the AboveNet acquisition of course. Zayo also did a bit of hiring across the pond, appointing Alastair Kane as its European VP. He’ll be working out of London, with an eye on the expansion markets over on the continent as well.

Sunesys picked up a contract in the education vertical down in Georgia this week. They’re providing the Hall County School District with a 10Gbps WAN connecting 40 locations back to the district’s hub in Gainesville, some 50 miles northeast of Atlanta. It’s an E-Rate project, but one close to other Sunesys fiber territory in metro Atlanta.

Global Capacity added another service provider to its One Marketplace exchange. They’ve signed a new bilateral wholesale services agreement with Earthlink, interconnecting in New York, Chicago, and Atlanta. The arrangement will give Earthlink better off-net reach, and provide Global Capacity’s exchange with additional access endpoints across the country.

And Birch Communications has completed its acquisition of select customer and network assets from Covista. The deal brings customers in the northeast, southeast, and southwest, plus a Metaswitch-based network with switching centers in Tennessee, New York, and Los Angeles. Birch has now closed some 17 deals over the past 7 years, and while none have been huge on their own, such things start to add up eventually.
