Int’l Roundup: AT&T, GTS, Level 3, Vodafone

Here’s a quick roundup of some global network news, with items from AT&T, GTS Central Europe, Level 3, and Vodafone:

AT&T (NYSE:T, news, filings) won a big contract renewal with Shell. The Dutch multinational energy giant and global carrier have renewed their five-year-old relationship for another five years. The deal was and still is AT&T’s largest retail communications services contract with a non-US-based multinational, and includes a wide range of services provided worldwide.

GTS Central Europe reached a big milestone the other day, passing the 15,000 on-net building mark. That number includes quite a bit of fixed wireless in addition to fiber, and grew by 1,300 during 2012. They’ve spent EUR30M over the past two years on expanding their on-net footprint across the Czech Republic, Hungary, Poland, Slovakia, and Romania.

Level 3 Communications (NYSE:LVLT, news, filings) picked up another gaming contract. Gamezhero has selected its CDN as the primary content delivery network by which it delivers thousands of games to its 4.5 million user base worldwide. The gaming community covers a lot more turf than did a few years ago, as tablets have brought a lot more of the arcade-style games back alongside the MMORPGs and such.

And India’s DoT has dealt Vodafone’s mobile business a blow, summarily denying an extension of the company’s spectrum licenses in Mumbai, Delhi, and Kolkata. That will leave them bidding for the spectrum they’re already using late next year. The regulator/regulatee relationship in India has been awfully adversarial lately, hasn’t it?
