One oops and much of northern Alabama found itself even further away from the rest of the world than normal yesterday morning. A utility contractor snagged one of AT&T’s main cables in the region while digging (what else) and took down the region west of Huntsville, including Florence, Decatur, Hartselle, Madison, and Athens for both voice and data.
You’d think that by now most fiber cables serving that much territory wouldn’t have a single point of failure, but I guess redundancy has yet to make it to this part of north
Alabama. Such things happen of course when folks dig without checking what might be down there, which can never be completely eliminated of course. Service was restored later in the afternoon after AT&T’s crews made the necessary repairs
