Optimum Lightpath Expands Indoors

September 13th, 2012 by · 1 Comment

When you’ve lit more than 5,000 buildings with fiber in one metro area, where do you expand to next? Why indoors of course. Optimum Lightpath is taking to WiFi to expand its fiber-based service portfolio. Managed WiFi, that is, for mid-market and large organizations that have in-building wireless networks and could use help keeping them running properly.

It makes a lot of sense, actually. Enterprise WiFi can be much more complicated than a simple home router/gateway and are getting more complex all the time. But for many businesses it isn’t complicated enough to justify having the expertise in-house or the capex to do it themselves properly. So Optimum Lightpath can expand its pie by helping manage, monitor, and maintain those networks.

I still think they might start looking more aggressively beyond the NY metro area before long. Perhaps the loosening of cable/CLEC merger regulations will give them an opportunity.

Has anyone looked at their pricing? $1,300/month for a get-in-the door price? As a service provider, of course I’d do it! As a customer, no way in hell. I setup the smallest number of employees and the smallest area, so that should be one access point.

Also, $9k/year for support and monitoring of a single AP?

It sounds like they just make up numbers to make their service sound good.

I’m trying to determine pricing for my own managed WiFi service, but this inflated pricing doesn’t help much.
