New London Data Center For Level 3

August 20th, 2012 by · 4 Comments

In a sign of the company’s growing confidence in its cash flows, Level 3 Communications (NYSE:LVLT, news, filings) this morning announced the addition of a new data center facility to its London footprint. The new facility is located in Hayes, West London, strategically located to serve the financial vertical, amongst others.

The new facility is of Level 3’s ‘Premier Elite’ class, which supports higher power densities, enhanced security, and the full range of hosting and managed IT systems. It sits on Level 3’s fiber equidistant between Chi-X and the financial services district in central London, right on their lowest latency transatlantic route – which is AC-1 if I recall correctly. It will offer disaster recovery, replication and redundancy – including synchronous replication.

Adding new data center facilities is something Level 3 has not done much of over the past decade, reflecting the ongoing shift in the company’s fundamentals following the Global Crossing purchase. As the realized synergies add up and 2013 cash flows look better and better, they will have a freer hand when it comes to capex for expansions like this.

Strategically, this is part of Level 3’s efforts to take on the enterprise sector in the UK, and Europe as a whole, in a bigger way than they or Global Crossing have tried in the past.

The London facility probably resembles the one launched in San Francisco back in March, you think?

Yup, they plan on “investing” lots of money in the near term for Enterprises needing “Metro Connectivity” with “FIBER” going directly in the ground to their existing and new customers.

I am hearing numbers all the way up to $2B over the next couple of years…..

Walter, is that you? Listen, it’s me Charlie. I am sorry for “instructing” CarlK that your company is “too hard to figure about fourteen months ago in Pasadena, but I am now seeing THE LEVEL 3 LIGHT since reviewing his RULE of 78 Math confirming blue skies ahead using 1000 salespeople nearly on the books again, while excluding indirect sales channels and expanded hires from here. I’ll put in a good word to Warren so TNT, I mean Ted and Todd can load up their Berkshire trucks.

That’s my STOREY, and JEFF everything else because I am “DAMN RIGHT!” and “it’s so simple.”

  • Walter Scott says:

Charlie, When you told CarlK that Level 3 was too hard to figure out, all you had to do is look around and see every living thing needs a BACKBONE to move. Voice, video, and data over the Internet need a global IP BACKBONE to move or deliver content to end users across & around the globe. So, Charlie Munger it is simple and TNT will replace you and Warren with the new thinking ahead. Level 3 Communications will make BNSF look like chump change when TNT go all in.
