Metro Bytes: Achelea, Optimum Lightpath, Conterra

August 15th, 2012 by · 2 Comments

Here’s a quick look at several interesting items from the metro space: a brand new build from Achelea, a victory in the firefighter vertical by Optimum Lightpath, and a hybrid fiber/microwave network for a school district by Conterra:

Achelea Global Networks announced that it has begun the construction of fiber rings in North Carolina, Georgia, and California. Phase 1 is in the Charlotte area, where they are building a route from Charlotte through Kings Mountain to Asheville, another that goes around Kings mountain for diversity, and a route from Charlotte to Raleigh Durham. Some of the buildout will go live in Q4 of this year, and some in Q1 of 2013. This is the first I’ve seen of Achelea, which I have now added to my metro maps pages. I’ll be curious to see what they have planned in Georgia and California.

Optimum Lightpath has built out its fiber into the main headquarters and two substations of the Syosset Fire Department out on Long Island. The extra bandwidth will enable the department and its 150 volunteer members to receive and share more data than copper could ever support, enabling them to potentially save more lives. They’ll also be able to monitor and remotely control lights, garage doors, and traffic signals across all locations, making them more efficient and hence less costly.

And in Pennsylvania, Conterra Broadband Services has completed the buildout of a hybrid network for the Red Lion Area School District, whose nine schools lie in the countryside southeast of York. Of course, Conterra’s forte has been its microwave connectivity, which it had already been providing to the district. But they aren’t afraid of adding fiber to the equation where it makes sense.
