Friday Poll: What Should the FCC Do Now On Special Access?

August 31st, 2012 by · 4 Comments

Labor Day weekend awaits, at least in the US.  Here’s a Friday poll first though.  After last week’s FCC move suspending flexible deregulation of special access markets on the grounds they were obviously not working, the next question is obvious.  What ought they do now, if anything?

You didn’t offer an option for “Stop meddling in the free market”. That would be my vote. The more government involvement, the more unintended consequences.. Compare the level of investment and innovation in the unregulated Internet and wireless markets with the lack of either in local access markets and US Postal Service (got to bar codes decades later than free market participants).

    Annon,

Isn’t there loads of evidence that the incumbent special access providers have basically monopoly power? If so, the free market does not work, and that is why regulation may be necessary. That seems like a pretty big difference between special access and the Internet.

Build it yourself. That’s what I’ve done. I cheer every time the incumbents raise prices or screw someone else. More business for me.

Did anyone see or hear the time warner CEO speech at Comptel? She was rarin to go on many subjects pertaining to how ILEC’s and FCC inattention sucks, special access among them.
