Metro Fiber & On-Net Buildings Summer 2012 Update

July 6th, 2012 by · 5 Comments

As promised (but a little later than expected), I have updated my Metro Fiber and Lit Buildings statistics once again. There are a few stragglers promising new data that still may come in for whom I will update this post, but here’s the current list (recent updates in purple):

New this summer (to the list, but not the industry of course!) are Summit Broadband, with a dense network down in Orlando, and DukeNet down in the Carolinas.

Despite those additions, the list shrank in length a bit again due to consolidation activity – with PAETEC, Arialink, and AboveNet having been acquired since last winter. Yes, Zayo’s number is already post-AboveNet as they have already posted a combined on-net building list.  I’m hoping Windstream will put together a combined number before long, but don’t expect the three largest ILECs to make such data public any more than I did last quarter.  I’m still looking for data on the cable MSO’s metro Ethernet buildouts (other than Optimum Lightpath, which has always been public with such data).

There are now at least competitive 5 providers with more than 5,000 fiber-fed buildings, more 20 with more than 1,000.  While there is obviously plenty of overlap that a simple sum doesn’t account for, the sum of on-net buildings for companies I have been able to track now exceeds 100,000.

You can always find this table up in the Resources section at the top of the homepage.
