Richmond’s Schools Get Some Windstream Fiber

June 19th, 2012 by · 2 Comments

Windstream (NYSE:WIN, news, filings) said today that it is bringing big bandwidth to the Richmond Public Schools in Virginia. The buildout covers 87 route miles hooking up some 58 locations across the school district under an E-Rate contract. Richmond’s teachers and students will hopefully find ways to put all that new bandwidth to good use.

This surely derives from the Intellifiber/Cavalier assets, which came to Windstream via the PAETEC acquisition. [EDIT: Unverified reports say it was KDL fiber – I hadn’t realized KDL had a presence in Virginia?]  That fiber makes up the bulk of Windstream’s fiber on the eastern seaboard and in Virginia in particular. The map to the left was cropped from the former Intellifiber network map from a while back, showing that this was one of their strongholds.  Today’s deal is further evidence that Windstream intends to remain active on the fiber front.

Windstream probably has a couple more quarters of integration to really be ready, but I think there’s no doubt that they will be looking to fill out their fiber footprint in those parts of the country where they don’t yet have their own facilities.  A variety of assets might fit that bill, but perhaps XO would be the best overall way to get there, should Icahn decide to go that route.
