EMEA Roundup: Interoute, Alcatel-Lucent, Digital Realty, Eutelsat, NTT

Monday’s early news comes from across the Atlantic from Interoute, Alcatel-Lucent, Digital Realty, NTT, and Eutelsat:

Pan-European operator Interoute (news) picked up another financial customer for its growing cloud business. The financial messaging solutions provier STERCI will be putting its global transactions platform into Interoute’s private cloud. Leveraging both SaaS and IPVPN, STERCI will have a fully redundant solution across sites in Geneva and Zurich. The two are also working together to help STERCI with the rapidly evolving regulatory requirements in the banking sector.

Alcatel-Lucent (NYSE:ALU, news, filings) is entering the customer experience segment with a new managed service offering. They are aiming at helping operators to assure consistent quality for users of smartphones and tablets. Their solution seeks to determine the best indicators of customer satisfaction and then to take very targeted actions to resolve anything that might be having a negative impact. Sounds like a good plan, I wonder how it will work in practice.

Digital Realty Trust (NYSE:DLR, news, filings) racked up another long term lease in its Paris facility. Hosting and managed services provider Ecritel has moved in to 400 square meters of space, expanding its footprint in response to growing demand for IaaS services.  Ecritel operates on four continents, with a presence both in Montreal and New York.

Eutelsat is taking on Africa. They unveiled a new satellite broadband solution called IP Easy aimed at both residential and SME users across sub-Saharan Africa from the Gulf of Guinea to Madagascar. The service’s hub is in Southern Europe, or Sardinia to be exact, giving it backbone connectivity to key European interconnection points. Lots of fiber has been going in across and around Africa, but satellite is still the only way to get bandwidth across much of the region. But I don’t know if I’d call it easy, or ‘IP Easy’ in this case.

And NTT Europe is expanding its European presence further with a move to the north.  They have opened a new office in Stockholm, from which they will extend their presence across the Nordic region.  That includes IP transit, WAN, and cloud services, with its NTT-cousin-company Secode adding muscle for managed security services.
