Alcatel-Lucent, Juniper Upgrade Their Core Routers

May 22nd, 2012 by · 1 Comment

Dueling router upgrades this morning from Juniper Networks (NASDAQ:JNPR, news, filings) and Alcatel-Lucent (NYSE:ALU, news, filings), both of which are boosting the raw capacity of their core systems. The equipment sector is a bit edgy right now, both from macroeconomic effects over in Europe and from stiffening competition.

Alcatel-Lucent finally went all-in with a new box called the XRS 7950, which is essentially an expanded version of their 7750 service router – built on the same technology, just for bigger applications. The full-rack version has 16Tbps of total capacity, which will be doubled by linking two of them together once they have that shipping in the first half of 2013.

Meanwhile, Juniper is taking its new T4000 core router into the multichassis realm. Their new TXP multichassis routing system will be able to take four of those, or eight of the older T1600s. For now that’s a maximum of 22Tbps, with an expansion to 64Tbps over time.

Those are some big capacity numbers, but then traffic growth will be traffic growth.
