Metro Bytes 4/17: XO, Fiberlight, Zayo, Tower Cloud

April 17th, 2012 by · 2 Comments

Here’s a quick look at some news already this week from competitive metro operators XO, Fiberlight, Zayo, and Tower Cloud:

Breaking its long public silence about its restructuring over the past two quarters, XO Holdings (news, filings) relaunched its brand yesterday with a new purple logo and a newly colorful design for their website and a blog to boot The new mantra is providing a great customer experience, which sounds good enough even if it’s not terribly original. Most still think that Icahn will sell XO in a few quarters, but whatever does happen hopefully the next six months will be on an upward path for all involved.

zColo, the colo and interconnection division of Zayo Group (news, filings), picked up a key new customer in New Jersey. They’ll be providing a private suite and interconnection services for Hibernia Atlantic at 165 Halsey. We’re all still waiting to hear whether another bidder will challenge Zayo’s proposed purchase of AboveNet, which was announced 29 days ago with a 30 day go-shop provision.  I haven’t heard any relevant whispers on the subject.

Southeastern provider FiberLight (news) picked up some federal dollars in Maryland yesterday. They will be providing Ethernet connectivity for the National Institute of Health between Bethesda and a remote data center. After several years of aggressive buildouts, Fiberlight now has more than 600 route miles of metro fiber criscrossing the DC/VA/MD region.

And further to the south, Florida-based Tower Cloud has launched its seventh backhaul market. They have rolled out services to Dothan and Fort Rucker down in the southeast corner of Alabama. The new network serves 48 cell sites with 135 route miles of fiber, supporting wireless carriers working on the 4G wireless buildouts we hear so much about. Tower Cloud has other similar expansion markets in the works as well.  Earlier this year they did a deal with Southern Telecom to help expand into Georgia as well.

SO very quite on teh Zayo/Abovenet deal. Perhaps a serious counter offer with no need to leak informattion or no counter offers and Zayo now becomes one of big time players in industry. Could they also then bid on XO for intercity connectivity and not onlt rival Level 3 in usa but perhaps surpass.
