International Roundup 2/21: Rostelecom, Interoute, Sea Fibre, Savvis

February 21st, 2012 by · 1 Comment

Plenty of news overseas lately that is worth a quick look:

RosTelecom is beefing up its Russia-Europe connectivity. They have selected TeliaSonera AB (ETR:TLS, news, filings) International Carrier to manage a new link between Kingisepp and Stockholm over the Swedish giant’s submarine link across the Baltic Sea. Kingisepp lies just to the east of St.Petersburg along the Gulf of Finland. The extra bandwidth and diversity will help RosTelecom’s efforts to develop its Europe-Asia transit service.

Interoute has been busy with the assembly of its cloud portfolio. Yesterday they announced the rebranding of Quantix as Interoute Application Management.  Interoute bought Quantix five months ago for their cloud-based database management product and the underlying Nimbus-Q cloud platform.  The new branding foreshadows their intention to turn it into a much more general application management business.  It seems very likely that Interoute has additional such purchases in mind for 2012.

Sea Fibre Networks says that its new Celtixconnect cable is officially live. The 144 fiber system connects Dublin with London via a 131km submarine link to the northern Welsh coast followed by terrestrial fiber through Manchester.  It’s notable that the going live press release focuses immediately on the low latency financial trading vertical. The low latency angle also featured in their win at Colt last month.

Savvis (news, filings) [a subsidiary of CenturyLink (NYSE:CTL, news, filings)] has launched its enterprise-class cloud services in Japan. It’s Symphony-branded public and private cloud products are now available out of the company’s Tokyo data center. Anicom Holdings, which specializes in pet insurance services, has been in beta with Savvis’s cloud. Pet insurance? Nevermind, I don’t want to know – a contract is a contract is a contract.  It does also serve to remind us that CenturyLink’s global presence is likely to grow from here via its Savvis subsidiary, and that I really have to stop thinking of them as a domestic player.
