Starting the New Year With a Bang, Internap Buys Voxel

January 3rd, 2012 by · 1 Comment

Colocation and boutique IP networking provider Internap Network Services (NASDAQ:INAP, news, filings) took another big step into the cloud this morning, announcing that they have purchased Voxel.  Voxel sells hosting and cloud services to the enterprise.  The deal has already closed, and has been valued about $30M immediately with another $5M to follow if various targets are met.

Internap has been retooling its business toward colocation and the cloud for the last year or two, and taking a larger position in the hosting space via inorganic means is a natural step that I was a bit surprised they hadn’t taken already.  Voxel brings to the table about 1,000 customers of the small to mid-sized IT infrastructure type, which is very complementary to Internap’s current business model.  They also have locations in Amsterdam and Singapore that will help add international bulk to Internap’s offerings.

Only in the past several quarters has Internap managed to return to a growth footing, and they are looking ahead to a more interesting 2012.
