Allstream Boosts On-Net Footprint

January 26th, 2012 by · 2 Comments

Up in Canada, MTS Allstream today provided an update on its metro buildout status. According to an Allstream PR yesterday, they added connections to 75 buildings to their fiber infrastructure in the fourth quarter, and 299 for the year altogether. The company says its expansion into new targeted markets has helped to generate new sales, with 46 new IP contracts in Q4 alone.

I had not found data for Allstream’s on-net footprint before, so it is with pleasure that I report now having added the company to my metro fiber and on-net building statistics page. While in the PR they gave only a total fiber miles of 30,000km, digging down to this page gives us an intercity count of 18,000km and thus the metro mileage is about 12,000km.  Or as we like to call it in the US, 7,500 miles give or take.

Canadian fiber (fibre) doesn’t get as much attention here on Ramblings, but it’s only because it’s not my turf and I don’t know as much about the assets out there.  I have noticed lately though that many Canadian-based providers have also been in metro-fiber-expansion mode.
