Metro Bytes 11/22: Syringa, Clearfield, FiberLight, PAETEC

November 22nd, 2011 by · 4 Comments

Here’s another quick roundup of news in metro and regional networking:

Idaho-based Syringa Networks continued its southern expansion into Utah, signing a dark fiber deal with C7 Data Centers. Syringa recently built out its network in the area, and started selling its dark fiber product there just last month. C7 will use the connectivity to better position its new Bluffdale facility, amongst other things.

Clearfield Communications (NASDAQ:CLFD, news, filings), a maker of fiber management and connectivity platforms, picked up an expansion contract with West Kentucky and Tennessee Telecommunications Cooperative (WK&T). They’ll be providing gear for the out-sized $123.8M stimulus project, which will bring fiber to as many as 21K homes and businesses across nine counties. Construction is underway, but they’ll be working on the project for another three years.

In Georgia, FiberLight says it will be providing 108 miles if fiber connectivity to North Georgia Networks, hooking up the $42M broadband infrastructure project to the rest of the internet. FiberLight will bridge a segment of its network in Alpharetta with NGN’s fiber, giving them a direct connection to the Telx facility at 56 Marietta in downtown Atlanta. FiberLight has been kind of quiet this year, but still expanding on the ground.

And in Texas, PAETEC (news, filings) became the latest provider to poach a bit on AT&T’s traditional state government turf. They have been awarded a contract that allows the company to sell its local voice, internet, and fixed wireless solutions to the more than 700 agencies, institutions, and enterprises that leverage the State of Texas Department of Information Resources. They already had a foot in the door selling their Pinnacle software line, but the new arrangement offers them a much more extensive opportunity. With all the government sector budget cutting and AT&T otherwise occupied, now seems to be a good time for competitive providers to make their case.

Your comment about Fiberlight being quiet rang true for many of us in the business. There is growing concern among Fiberlight vendors and customers that the company is in trouble.

There is some thought that there may be a liquidity issue.

That’s a pretty irresponsible comment without any basis of fact and obviuosly you’re really putting yourself out there with the “anonymous” username.

Should we just assume you work for Abovenet?
