Ramblings’ Jobs: XO

August 27th, 2011 by · 44 Comments

Seems like every weekend there’s another job posted on the Ramblings’ Jobs Board. This week, it’s none other than newly private XO Communications which is looking for Senior Major Account Executives in downtown Chicago and in nearby Oakbrook.  I’m watching XO curiously to see if the new ownership situation results in a change in the company’s fortunes operationally, and if they’re hiring then that would seem to be a pretty good sign.

The jobs board has been hopping all summer, and XO’s posting brings it back up to eight active listings.  Other job listings still on the books right now include one from Noanet, a CTO position at Unite Private Networksthree from Sidera and two from Fibertech.

Are you in the market for a job in the telecom and internet infrastructure sectors?  Either check out the site directly or subscribe to our Jobs RSS feed to receive updates on new jobs posted.  Are you hiring? You can list your company’s job openings on the Telecom Ramblings Jobs Board and reach a highly focused audience of potential new employees.  Your job listing will appear not only here, but on other related sites using the SimplyHired service which share listings.

If you haven't already, please take our Reader Survey! Just 3 questions to help us better understand who is reading Telecom Ramblings so we can serve you better!

XO is losing staff to Level 3 in Nashville market. This is one of their strongest markets and we have hired two already and are talking to more folks. Please don’t use my name.

    • Anonymouse says:

I find this hard to believe for two reasons. 1.) The XO office in Nashville has not had any turnover in quite awhile. 2.) Who would leave XO to deal with the Level(3) rolled out this year?

The only turnover I can recall was about 6 months ago and that was a non-performer. If Level(3) hired them, that will be short lived and a lesson learned.

  • Anony says:

Given the high turn over rate among sales people in telecom its not unusual. Also, the Nashville Level3 GM was a former XO GM in Memphis and Atlanta. I’m sure he’s been looking at bringing folks over from XO for some time.

  • Anonymoose says:

Speaking of GM’s, it’s very possible the XO GM in Nashville is on their way out the door in the immediate future and one of the reps there has already accepted the job as her replacement.

    • Karma says:

Hello all. This is the Karma police! This is what happens when you screw your employees over, countless times. This is also the product of not understanding how to perform as a leader. Good luck finding a career in the industry.. Oh and by the way get a hot oil treatment on that wig!

    • THREE THINGS MAKE THIS STRING FUNNY!!!

1.) The GM of XO Nashville not going anywhere

2.) A rep would never be promoted to GM

3.) Karma’s hair is thinning and greasy

    Who is karma?

  • sh says:

I can confirm that L3 has acquired at least one seasoned XO Rep in Nashville in the past three weeks

    Honestly who cares!

    CHAPTER 11?

    TICK TOCK, TICK TOCK….

    • Chuga-Chuga Choo-Choo says:

As odd as this may sound, L3 will be a great step in the right dirtection, and long overdue.

The train is on the tracks…. Where are you?

  • As a follow up, I know my grammer, literacy and grasp of the English language are all limited. Please don’t let that detract from my message that dragons, unicorns and Level 3 being successful are all things real…. Oh, and the pot at the end of the rainbow thingy too – thats’ real.

  • Anonymous says:

I think Chuga-Chuga has smoked a little too much of that pot! All kidding aside the landscape changes quickly and will continue to do so around here. More interesting times to follow.

  • Anonymous says:

    Yes like today or tomorrow.

  • Anonymous says:

One can only hope. Seems like company is for sale. Rumors of massive changes around corner. Too bad really bc it appeared the co was on it’s way. Looks like competitors will have a field day stealing more workers.

Big reorg announced Friday. Laura Thomas the interim CEO & the old CIO taking on ops – what a joke! How does one expect the people that were responsible for the failed business to get reorganized & then fix it? CI is definitely dressing up the pig to sell it 12 months & 1 day post privatizing the business.

  • Anonymous says:

At least they shot Wagner & the regulatory witch.

    • Anon says:

      CIO not the problem there.
Wagner & Toplisek are, nothing they did over there worked. They pissed everybody off and every decision they made was horrible for the business and good for their bonuses.

  • Anonymous says:

The entire senior team should be replaced!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Anonymous says:

Anon… Your facts are DEAD wrong! Wagner and Toplisek did everything possible, and have grown the business in 2011. XO is fine, and positioned for great growth in 2012.

    • Anon says:

Anonymous…please explain, what have they done for XO?

      • Anonymous says:

More in two years than anyone prior ….

        • Anon says:

Anonymous, you’re incorrect. You offer no facts. Just because you’re better than your predacesor does not signify “success”. Being the “less bad” is not a badge of honor.

Do you work at XO? Have you worked at XO? Talk to some people who have, and you’ll understand.

          – Those two did nothing for employee moral (see the Employee Survey they did Q4/Q1 where the Execs got absolutely butchered by the employees)

          – They created a completely unoriginal and cliched corporate mantra of “Think Customer” and then proceeded to cut 20%+ of the actual Customer Care group (in addition to some Service Delivery personnel)

          – And now both were obviously demoted with this recent announcement (Ernie is now looking over Sales, DW didn’t get the CEO position, and both are now EVP’s with vague job descriptions). Given their new roles, historically this doesn’t look good for their tenure at XO.

I want XO to succeed. XO has so much potential. There was just no way they were going to succeed under those two gentlemen. And to be honest, maybe their hands were tied by CI. It’s been no mystery inside or outside of XO that CI’s intentions have been confusing at best (and per those internal emails, most suspicions of premeditated suppression of the stock don’t seem to outlandish anymore).

They need new ownership. The sooner they are sold, the better.

  • Anonymous says:

Culture, living in the past, etc are the issues. Period. With new interim CEO where bod selected Laura Thomas company is in serious trouble. Ernest good guy, but he’s got work to do. Wagner is good leader, toplisek is a bum.

  • the source says:

No one on here knows shit. Start at the top. Said salesperson has already been offered and turned down said GM positon. Secondly the finacials of XO, L3 all all other CLECs are above all of your heads. These finacial roller coasters are common among all the companies. And third…… what the next year holds for telecom sales in nashville will shock the town and change the face of the business model and sales plan for every one of these companies.

Peice of advice. You should be selling instead of on here rambling about things that you know nothing about. Go sell something while you still have a fighting chance. End of the month is here and i bet none of you are even sniffing your quota and in the months to come will be lucky to have a quota. Happy monday!

    • To the Bomb Shelter! says:

See what you’re done? You’ve angered the middle manager who will surely be updating his resume tonight! Sorry folks, but XO is rearranging chairs on the Titanic…

  • Click on my name. I’m a bridge hopper. I was fired from XO for PIP and bitter about it. I was able to sucker Level 3 into hiring me. Give it 7 months and I’ll be singing TWTC’s praises.

  • Tennessee Two Step says:

Get your fiddles, your banjos, and your stone jugs too. It’s just a hillbilly rhythm with a touch of the blues… we’re doing the Tennessee Two Step all night long.

Looks like a little shake-up is going down. Its a bunch of scandals. Horse trading and back room deals. Package deals on the sly. A wolf sitting in the hen house. Oh, as the wonderful world turns at XO….

  • Still here says:

Nashville is still here and still strong!!! XO’s top rep for more than 10 years is still there and thats all they need! They will build back around her. WATCH.

  • Hard Truth says:

Top rep [snip: let’s not name non-public figures where possible please – Editor] leaves XO over Two weeks ago after 10 years. If that doesn’t send a message nothing will.
    WOW!!!!!!!!
Good luck XO you are going to need it.

  • Inside XO says:

So there was finally an offer made to Ichan to buy this dump call XO……he’d be a fool not to take it! Maybe BT can turn this hell hole around……or do what they do best….break it up and keep what they want!! going to be an interesting 20 days……………..!

  • Anonymous says:

BT was not on Rob’s list of his latest poll of M&A buyers for XO. Anyone want to describe the fit here?

  • Hammerdinger says:

Add DT to list while you’re thinking about it,especially since the T deal fell apart. They need the infrastructure more than anyone.

  • Anonymous says:

is there any real jobs at XO. I see they have a postings but are they real, or just another HR scheme

  • Sean says:

Anyone else see a similarity between XO’s newly rebranded website, logo, etc. and BT’s? August 19 is the one-year anniversary of Icahn’s taking XO private. Sale on Aug 20?
