Romania Needs 100G Ethernet?

July 19th, 2011 by · 2 Comments

Yesterday Ciena (NASDAQ:CIEN, news, filings) won yet another 100G contract, but this time it was further off the beaten path than usual.  The Romanian research network RoEduNet will be using the optical equipment manufacturer’s coherent optical technology to power the first live 100GbE network in Eastern Europe.  Their partner Felix Telecom will be handling the nitty gritty of design, installation, deployment, and maintenance.

RoEduNet is part of GEANT, and operates 4200km of fiber across the country hooking up academic and research sites around Romania.  In this case, the 100GbE link will connect Bucharest, which is the only city most Americans know in Romania, to Iaşi, which is the country’s second-largest city and lies 450km to the north.  RoEduNet already uses Ciena’s gear in their existing infrastructure, and will simply add 100G wavelengths alongside the 10G links they already run.

Not that they actually need it I think, but it’s a research network – meaning they’ve got funding and want to put the new technology through its paces.  Nevertheless, 100G and 100GbE are clearly moving steadily into the mainstream, and the data sets produced by big science do demand huge connections these days.
