An Enterprise Cloud for NTT America

April 11th, 2011 by · 2 Comments

NTT America (news) [a subsidiary of NTT Communications (NYSE:NTT, news, filings)] is taking its efforts in the cloud space to larger customers with a new enterprise private cloud hosting environment.  Having long had an enterprise hosting business, NTT America has been one of the most active telcos when it comes to offering cloud services.  They got started back in late 2009 and fleshed out their offerings with VMware last summer.  Today's enterprise cloud offering is also built using VMware products, and is aimed not only at the mid-sized customers but to large enterprises in need of a flexible approach.  The approach creates virtual data centers for each customer, within which they can create, use, and manage virtual machines and applications.

It gives NTT America both private and public cloud products, letting it address a wider variety of customers.  So those who feel the need for entirely separate services can have their own private cloud, while those who don't can opt for a multi-tenant solution.  Just who is going to want what in this regard remains a wide open question, but I think there will be a spectrum of needs and hence it seems prudent to have the flexibility to meet them.

NTT America and its parent are also interestingly positioned on the IP transit front following today's LVLT/GLBC merger.  The most recent data from Renesys shows that NTT seems to have surged past Sprint to become the third most extensive IP network, which will give them the #2 slot following the completion of that deal later this year.
