360Networks Pumps Up the Metro With Fiber From Zayo

March 23rd, 2011 by · 1 Comment

Western regional operator 360networks is adding some more metro fiber to its diet, courtesy of Zayo Group (news, filings).  The two companies formalized a strategic relationship under which Zayo Fiber Solutions will provide metro dark fiber connectivity, which 360Networks will use to expand its local reach in support of its transport and IP business.

The regional network of 360Networks has long been primarily the intercity fiber built (or assembled) by Touch America way back in the bubble.  Lately though they’ve been adding metro to complement it – last month it was via Alpheus down in Texas.  Just where they’re going to be adding fiber from Zayo is an open question, as actual geography wasn’t mentioned.  However, the intersection of Zayo’s metro footprint and the larger cities on 360Network’s intercity backbone covers about a dozen markets.

Since Zayo debuted its ZFS division starting with fiber from the AGL acquisition, they have been making good on their promise to expand its focus across their footprint.  Earlier this year, they sold 2500 miles to FiberTower and made a deal with FORETHOUGHT.net in Denver.

It’s been six months now since Zayo closed AFS, so given their past rate I’d say they’re due for another soon.  Actually, I’ve always thought Zayo and 360networks looked good together on the map, and have wondered if they might merge someday – but perhaps that’s just my overactive imagination.
