Akamai Accelerates WeeWorld, While Level 3 Speeds Up the FBI

February 1st, 2011 by · 3 Comments

Dueling PRs in the CDN sector this morning, one from the cutting edge of social media and the other a major government website:

Akamai (NASDAQ:AKAM, news, filings) won a deal with WeeWorld, which is a global social game that I haven’t yet come across but has 40M or so registered ‘WeeMees’ (I don’t even want to know).  Since using Akamai to cache their content closer to the consumer, WeeWorld’s interactive website has seen an 8-30% reduction in page load times, which is significant in these low-attention-span times we live in.  Interestingly, they revealed a bit of geographical detail on where they saw the most improvements – which in this case seems to be Europe, where they saw the 30% improvements as compared to 8-15% in the USA.

And back in the USA, Level 3 Communications (NYSE:LVLT, news, filings) announced a high profile Federal Markets CDN win at none other than the FBI.  They will be providing caching services for the main site as well as the tips site and local homepages for 56 field offices around the country.  So now perusing that ‘Most Wanted’ list might be a little faster, helping the younger generation catch a few more criminals before moving on to the next click I guess.  Level 3 reports earnings tomorrow morning, and this announcement will no doubt give them something to talk about.

Seems like most major websites should use a CDN already.  Heck, even I do in a basic form, and I don’t have 40M WeeMees or a Most Wanted List or anything of that sort.

Morche, Morche, Morche! Nice win in a non traditional space but to really capture Mr. Market’s attention, we need to hear about NINE DIGIT federal wins! That’s what Big (3)’s do!

And, that’s what this factory was built for, remember? Stop toying with your competitors, and put it to them via NETWORX already!

Akamai used to deliver the fbis website. So if anything it will be slower now for most people not faster.
