XO, TW Telecom Advance in Upstate NY

October 20th, 2010 by · 2 Comments

Both XO and TW Telecom announced news in upstate New York of late:

XO Holdings (news, filings) has expanded its IP network into Western New York, adding PoPs in Buffalo and Rochester.  The are now able to offer internet access and connectivity solutions, converged VoIP, IPVPN, VPLS, and business continuity solutions across both metro areas.  I hadn’t realized that XO didn’t have much of a presence in the area – it’s a pretty competitive region, though according to their maps they did have some legacy voice business in Rochester.  XO seems to be expanding on multiple fronts right now, almost as if they weren’t worried about the success of the $200M rights offering they have planned.

For its part, TW Telecom (NASDAQ:TWTC, news, filings) responded to Level 3’s ice cream win with a dairy victory of its own.  They will be providing IPVPN services to the Upstate Niagara Cooperative, which is owned by some 386 dairy farms in the area and outputs milk, ice cream mix, dip, cottage cheese, sour cream, yogurt and flavored-milk based beverages.  They need the bandwidth to hook up their seven locations, of which TW Telecom has (or will have) several on-net.  The dairy industry has become high tech these days, or so I have been told.

Should have a new governor in New York soon, not that it matters much given the level of dysfunction in Albany.
