Obama Names Crowe to Chair NSTAC

October 5th, 2010 by · 4 Comments

Yesterday, President Obama named James Crowe, the CEO of Level 3 Communications (NYSE:LVLT, news, filings), as the Chair of the National Security Telecommunications Advisory Committee (NSTAC).  NSTAC is designed to provide critical industry-based analyses and advice to the President regarding communications and national security, and to provide recommendations regarding how to assure vital telecommunications links in times of crisis.

So who’s on it?  30 industry executives from major network service providers as well as from IT, finance, and aerospace.  Hmmm, so it’s a room full of ultra-scheduled people used to being in charge?  Presiding over this bunch sounds a bit like trying to herd cats, I’m not sure I envy Mr. Crowe’s task ahead.  There’s no doubt he’s got the background for the job though.  It’s a public feather in his cap too, perhaps one day he will pull a Meg Whitman and run for office in Colorado someday?  Hah!

Levity aside, I’m not much of a believer in committees like this, but there is certainly a need for some real thinking about infrastructure security going forward.

After multiple decades of the SOS, politically speaking tied to cronyism’s ineffectiveness, at the same time failing to position the US adequately compared to emerging economies around the globe, some here are criticizing this including Powell?

Without a doubt, our enemies and demons come from within!

What more good news could telecom/internet/technology investors require before becoming optimistic?

I know, it’s the equity investments coming down pike by at least one of Obama’s other advisors, in the form of Buffett’s Berkshire and Microsoft.

That’s my wish for this day, so, in honor of Jim Crowe today, “Bring it on!” 🙂

the shame is that they didn’t name him to the USA deficit managment panel…. it’s all about the ReFi…

Is Crowe on Wall Street or Main Street? The only thing I know is, given the price of Level 3 stock, it no longer qualifies as big business! Maybe big Jim should focus on selling Level 3’s wares and his mansion before ruining another organization.
