Equinix Plans Third Datacenter in Tokyo

September 27th, 2010 by · 1 Comment

Colocation provider Equinix (NASDAQ:EQIX, news, filings) today announced yet another construction project.  The company intends to spend some $70M to build a 79,600 square foot facility in Tokyo, which will be named TY3 in the company’s predictable alphanumeric tradition.  Due for completion next summer sometime, the new IBX will add another 960 cabinet equivalents to Equinix’s footprint.  That should boost them over 2500, I believe.  It will be directly connected via fiber to TY1 and TY2 of course.

It was just three and a half weeks ago that Equinix announced an expansion of its TY2 facility, spending $9M for another 140 cabinet equivalents which should come online in the fourth quarter.  Clearly that was just a temporary measure, capable of holding off demand only for a few quarters. Each facility in Japan that they build is bigger than the last, TY1 was 42K square feet, while TY2 was 73K square feet.  And given the premium on space in Japan generally, I’m sure

Proximity to the country’s major financial exchanges no doubt has something to do with the increasing demand, which is probably true also for Equinix’s other expansion projects in the Far East.  Looks like some of that new undersea fiber will come in handy.  I wonder which transpacific routes have the latency edge currently.

Although TY2 is much larger than TY1, it’s utilizing slightly less colo server space than the original facility right now–less than 20,000 sq ft, in fact. I’d conjecture that there may be further room for expansion within TY2, depending on how the space is configured. But I’m sure you’re right, Rob, that Equinix is building out TY3 in anticipation of maxing out capacity in Tokyo fairly soon.
