Datacenter Roundup 8/2: Telecity, Equinix, RCN Metro

August 2nd, 2010 by · 1 Comment

Several data center items hit the wires this morning worthy of a quick look:

Over in the UK Telecity Group (LON:TCY, news, filings) is buying Internet Facilitators Limited (IFL), which operates a carrier neutral datacenter in Manchester.  The purchase will add some 1,600 square meters to the company’s total footprint, at a cost of £21.1M.  That adds to the company’s existing 3,400 square meters in the city, which has of late been seeing a higher level of interest from various operators.

Equinix (NASDAQ:EQIX, news, filings) has opened phase 1 of its third Atlanta data center.  The new facility cost $61M and starts with 400 cabinets available to customers.  Phase 2 is of course already underway and due to be completed in the fourth quarter, after which there will be some 1,450 cabinets available.  These days speaking of ‘phases’ seems inaccurate in the colocation space, it’s more like ‘waves’ in that they are proceeding in parallel rather than in series.  Ah well, Equinix’s expansion on all fronts continues uninterrupted regardless.

And RCN Metro, the metro fiber division of RCN Business (NASDAQ:RCNI, news, filings), is expanding its colocation footprint at 111 8th Avenue in New York City.  They didn’t happen to mention by how much, but space is of course limited in Manhattan no matter who you are so it can’t be by that much.  I’m a bit surprised that ABRY’s acquisition of RCN hasn’t completed yet though, I wonder what the holdup is.

I’ve used multiple datacenters over the past 16 years. I’ve never seen such a poorly operated and managed datacenter as I do in Telecity.
