For Level 3 Communications (NYSE:LVLT, news, filings) and its CDN division, it’s been quite a summer for live sports. It seems like every week there is an event somewhere they are handling the streaming for. Some of them are the big events like the World Cup and the Tour de France, but others are lesser known but with an online following.
This morning the company announced that it is providing its end-to-end Internet Broadcast services to FUEL TV, serving live HD both online and to their iPhone application. FUEL TV’s events are things like skateboarding, snowboarding, and music concerts which have a disproportionately large online viewership as opposed to traditional sports. Leveraging Vyvx allows Level 3 to bundle delivery of the feeds with their capture and encoding.
And on Monday they revealed that they delivered the 2010 CrossFit Games over the weekend, also leveraging both Vyvx and their CDN platform. What are the CrossFit games? Well, it’s more of a workout contest, finding the fittest rather than the most skillful at a particular skill or event. They don’t even tell the athlete’s ahead of time what the individual events will be, so all they can do to prepare is, well, work out alot. A strange event from my perspective, but it has its adherents around the globe as well.
