A Rambling Birthday

May 7th, 2009 by · 7 Comments

One year ago today, I posted my first article on Telecom Ramblings.  Since then this site has evolved so rapidly it has just boggled my mind at times.  It started as a curiosity, soon grew into a hobby, and has been on an upward trend ever since.  I have been truly humbled by the outpouring of interest in my various ramblings about the telecom and internet infrastructure sectors.  I’d like to thank everyone out there for the feedback and support that has made it possible, as well as the sponsors (NTT America, Hibernia Atlantic, and Conterra) who decided to take a chance on a relative unknown.

I think the success of this site has had its roots in an information vacuum.  While gadget blogs, marketing blogs, and blogs about blogging sprang up everywhere, bandwidth and fiber and related topics were often neglected – covered by the big sites but as a secondary and largely out-of-favor subject.  My posts through the first year have always lived somewhere between the boundaries of news, research & analysis, and commentary, but the balance has shifted over time and has sometimes blurred more than I intended.  In my second year, I want to add more distinction between the three, so to enable this you will see some changes to the site as we move into and through the summer.  I will be making non-news resources such as the metro fiber list, maps, and financial models more visible and accessible, so that the site becomes generally more useful to readers than just news and commentary.  I also hope to re-introduce the forum this summer now that there may be enough readers to support one and the technology for integrating one with wordpress has matured somewhat.

Over time, I hope to make Telecom Ramblings into a neutral meeting place for the industry:  a platform for information, ideas, and sales leads.  One step at a time though, one step at a time.  As always, I invite reader submissions, whether in the form of guest posts, material for my too-infrequently-updated tales from the field series, suggestions for site development, etc.  They help to give more depth to the website than any single person can provide.  Thanks again.

Time flies when you’re having fun, eh?

Your blog has turned into an industry resource and I refer to it often to a wide variety of groups as an example of how information can at times be efficiently disseminated in a time of information overload….and for some of your specific compilations and thoughts.

Thanks for the service and your insights on what we all do everyday to serve customers and grow our businesses, but too often within our own information vacuums –

    Cheers!

Only a year old? Given the quality of the content and discussion, I assumed it had been around for many years… Well done Rob – a great industry resource!
