Metro Bytes: Fatbeam, CrossLake Fibre, Zayo, Conterra

April 10th, 2018 by · Leave a Comment

Here are several news items worth mentioning on the metro and regional side of things:

Fatbeam is going to be building out some new regional fiber up in the Pacific Northwest. They have won a $2M contract with a regional carrier to put 100 route miles of fiber in place between Liberty Lake, Washington and Bonners Ferry, Idaho. The deal complements an E-Rate deal Fatbeam also won last year with Idaho’s Boundary County School District.

Crosslake Fibre has selected suppliers for the cable it has planned under Lake Ontario between Toronto and Buffalo. Hexatronic Cables & Internconnect Systems AB will be supplying the cable itself, while Maritech International LTD will be doing the horizontal drilling on the shore ends. When ready for service this coming October, the new cable will provide diversity on what has become a key route connecting Toronto to the US East Coast.

Zayo has made a minor inorganic move for its colocation business. The Boulder-based infrastructure company has acquired a second data center in northern Virginia. The facility is located at 1764 Old Meadow Lane in MacLean, and a quick search says it previously served as a piece of PAETEC and then Windstream. The deal adds 62,000 square feet of space that is already on-net with Zayo’s fiber footprint and will be tethered directly to the company’s Ashburn data center.

And one of the earlier fiber M&A deals of 2018 has closed. Conterra Networks has completed the acquisition of Network USA, boosting its network footprint down in Louisiana and east Texas. The deal adds 3,000 route miles of fiber to Conterra’s network, giving them 10,000 in all so far. Conterra is backed by Court Square Capital, and is probably still hungry for more consolidation opportunities.
