Friday Bytes: Ciena, Verizon, magicJack

Here’s a few more news bytes from this week:

Ciena has expanded its packet networking portfolio with some new capabilities. The hardware and software upgrades include three new edge products as well as extra capacity for the company’s 8700 Packetwave platform. That will let customers better address 100GbE and 10GbE needs out at the edge of the network.

Verizon Partner Solutions is taking its SDN capabilities to a wider audience. They have made an SD-WAN solution available to the company’s wholesale customers, who will be able to supply enterprises with secure, easily managed connectivity to underlie other services.

And we have some more M&A in the VoIP world. B. Riley Financial has signed an agreement to acquire magicJack VocalTec for $143M. That’s $8.71 per share, which represents a 23% premium over the 90-day average stock price. B. Riley will be combining the company with United Online, which it acquired last year. Carnegie Technologies had been seeking to buy an unwilling magicJack, a dance which will now either be cut short or get rather more complex.
