Wednesday Bytes: Verne Global, LINX, IOX, Windstream

Here are some quick takes of other news that’s worth a look:

Verne Global says that Colt has brought in its PrizmNet offering. Colt’s financial customers where therefore be able to take advantage of the Icelandic data center campus and put their data storage alongside all that green, geothermal and hydroelectric energy. Colt has had a presence at Verne Global’s campus Iceland since 2011, when they deployed a modular data center.

The London Internet Exchange has a new connectivity partner from East Africa. Djibouti Telecom has joined LINX as part of what is clearly a campaign to increase its interconnection options worldwide. They recently also signed on with France-IX and hooked up with Hurricane Electric.

The IOX submarine cable system has signed up a new anchor tenant. Mauritius Telecom has joined the effort, which will connect South Africa and India via a more direct route across the Indian Ocean, and conveniently through Mauritius of course. If all goes as planned, Alcatel Submrine Networks will build the system and bring it online sometime in 2019.

An unnamed major US-based airline has tapped Windstream for wavelengths this week. With the help of Ciena, Windstream will be providing encrypted waves to the airline as part of an evolution of the company’s IT infrastructure. Also included in the deal are dedicated Ethernet access as well as cloud connectivity to all the major cloud providers.

Am I the only one annoyed by this trend of low-grade telecom companies devolving to doing press releases of “unnamed” customers since the customers themselves have no interest in being publicly associated with them?

Not at all. Isn’t this really about Colt and Verne’s cadence of success? Regardless, Verne is something to read about. It has a high quality data center with fortune 500 customers. Adding this offering only strengthens that story. Humble opinion, of course.

Talking about two different parts of the article.

I refer to the Windstream “press” that Zayo and others are also guilty of lately, where the customer is not named. Obviously its because the customer doesn’t want to be associated with them in public. Which tells me the customer doesn’t think of them as part of their solution. Its just a commodity, like buying reams of paper.
