Tuesday Bytes: Seaborn, Element Critical, Ciena, FiberLight, Zayo

Here’s a quick survey of some news from the past few days through this morning:

The Seabras-1 cable system has been officially made ready for operations. The cable system stretches between São Paulo and the coast of New Jersey and features 6 fiber pairs and a theoretical capacity of 72Tbps. Seaborn Networks’ low latency solution between the New York markets and those of Brazil will commence in Q4.

CentralColo will henceforth be known as Element Critical. The data center operator has facilities in northern Virginia and Silicon Valley, and has plans to acquire more as it puts a national platform of mission-critical facilities in place. They’ll be doing that in concert with the private equity players Safanad and Industry Capital.

Ciena has two service providers on board with its new 400G technology. In the US, none other than AT&T has completed a test of 400GbE technology in advance of the anticipated IEEE standard. They used open-sourced white boxes as network equipment, open-source controller technology, and optical gear from Ciena to do it over a single wavelength. And down in New Zealand, Vodafone has deployed what it bills as the first live 400G per wavelength optical system based on Ciena’s gear. The deployment is capable of 44x400G across a single fiber pair, which is some 17.6Tbps for the math challenged.

FiberLight has brought in a familiar face as its new Chief Operating Officer. Don MacNeil, most recently CTO at EdgeConneX and COO at XO Communications before that, will be taking over the COO role at FiberLight. He’ll be joining at a time where at least part of three of the company’s four main regional fiber networks have been visited by hurricanes, so I’m guessing he’ll have his hands full right off the bat.

And Zayo’s management turnover continues.  The company has appointed Envysion’s Matt Steinfort as its new CFO.  Matt will take over from Ken desGarennes as of this Friday, September 15.  desGarennes will remain on board through the end of this year to ensure s smooth transition.  Caruso and Steinfort are old friends and colleagues of course, so this won’t be a difficult transition.
