Crosslake Unveils Plans For Submarine Cable Under Lake Ontario

May 9th, 2017 by · 1 Comment

Lake Ontario is going to be getting its very own submarine cable system if plans by Crosslake Fibre come to fruition. The company announced its intention this morning for a new cable system connecting the cities of Toronto, Canada and Buffalo, New York via a more direct, albeit wet route.

The two drivers for the project are clearly diversity and latency. Connections between Toronto and the US east coast currently have to travel southwest or northeast for some distance before turning south and east, and when they do they tend to use rather common paths. Crossing the lake first both adds uniqueness and shortens the distance traveled. With a high fiber count planned, a lot of traffic from New York City could potentially shift over.

I’ve heard persistent talk of this and a couple other proposed projects that would increase the diversity of connectivity between Canadian cities and US markets. Crosslake Fibre has put a ready-for-service date of September 2018 on the project.
