Backbone Bytes: Level 3, Sparkle, GTT

Here’s some more network news that’s worth a quick look as I continue to catch up with the world:

Level 3 revealed some success in the sporting events vertical yesterday. The Tampa Bay Buccaneers is leveraging a suite of services from the Broomfield-based network operator, including managed MPLS/IPVPN, dedicated internet access, and various voice-related services. The relationship itself reaches back to 2013. Level 3 is still awaiting the closing of the CenturyLink deal later this year.

TI Sparkle has added some depth of the Russian variety. The international arm of TIM Group has expanded its MPLS and Carrier Ethernet backbone with a new point of presence at a carrier neutral data center in Moscow. The new PoP will have direct routing to Sparkle’s Sicilian hub in Palermo via the infrastructure in southeastern Europe they’ve put together, which includes PoPs in Sofia, Bucharest, Tbilisi, Athens, Istanbul, and Tirana.

And GTT has added DDoS mitigation to its portfolio this week. On Monday they launched the new service within their managed security suite. GTT is leveraging Corero’s technology to power its DDoS capabilities. The new service includes both an always-on proactive option as well as an on-demand version, with pricing based on traffic volume.
