Network Roundup: CityFibre, FTS Fiber, MetTel, Zayo

Here’s a quick roundup of some network news that’s also worth a look:

If you thought CityFibre had enough on its plate already, then it’s even more full now. The UK metro fiber builder and operator has announced its fourth ‘Gigabit City’ in Scotland. They will start construction in June on fiber in the city of Stirling, with the initial buildout stretching 20km from Bannockburn to the Stirling Agriculturual center, hooking up som 30 anchor institutions along the way. Their local operator partner in this case will be MLL Telecoms.

FTS Fiber says it has another anchor tenant for its buildout out on the DelMarVa peninsula. They have been busy building out both a longhaul route connecting Virginia Beach and Ashburn along the peninsula and across the Chesapeake through Baltimore and a 110-mile metro network in Kent Count MD. The latter is expected to be ready by the end of this year, while the former is slated for sometime next year.

MetTel has won an enterprise SD-WAN contract. The financial services firm Wunderligh is using their SDN-powered WAN solution to accelerate its trading capabilities, moving up from a legacy TTL system. Of course, the savings of $35K in upfront and $12K annual costs probably didn’t hurt much either.

And in one of its now characteristic late week announcements, Zayo said on Friday an unnamed global e-commerce company has picked them for wavelength connectivity. The solution includes connectivity between data centers in Nevada and Utah, reducing latency and adding diversity. It also uses the longhaul fiber Zayo recently built out between Salt Lake and Sacramento.
