Thursday Bytes: Level 3, Hurricane Electric, CityFibre, Windstream

September 22nd, 2016 by · 6 Comments

Here are quick takes on three items internationally, and one for the upper Midwest:

Level 3 said this week that is has launched its next generation enterprise cloud platform for Latin America. New and improved portals with more self service options and optional managed services are aimed at increasing the flexibility available to enterprises in the region.

After many years of steadily adding global PoPs, Hurricane Electric is still finding new markets to expand into. This week the lucky market is the tiny city and country of Luxembourg, where HE has now opened a PoP at LuxConnect’s DC1.1 data center on the Bettembourg ICT Campus.

CityFibre has yet another Gigabit City to announce this month. Northampton, which lies between London and Birmingham, will join the ranks of the company’s metro expansion markets. They have partnered with local operator dbfb to make their 45km of fiber in the city available to the business community.  The announcement quickly follows similar news for the city of Reading from just last week.

And back closer to home, Windstream is announcing plans for a significant metro network upgrade in Minneapolis. on the company’s northwestern frontier when it comes to infrastructure. They didn’t give much geographical detail on the expansion itself, but did list Berger Transfer & Storage as one of the early beneficiaries of the new fiber. The news is part of a series of metro expansions for Windstream, the most recent of which was in Atlanta.

What is happening with the Mesiah of Level 3 Jeff Storey. He came in with enormous praise and given all credit for work that took years to complete and generally done before his time like moving the company to free cash flow. That happened almost immediately after he took over, so really not his success.

Now after several years it looks like Jeff is not the guy to operate the company, in fact the team he built when given the COO and than CEO was built with an abundance of the same leadership team that bankrupted Wiltel.

Of course Jeff was given great praise credit because he perfumed the Wiltel pig and sold to Level 3 making a luecadia millions. That is not to be mixed up with successfully operating a large telecom company

Question is what has he ever done that would suggest he can effectively lead large telecom. Seems like he can handle the easy stuff to like cut heads, cost, balance sheet moves etc but so could a 100 other folks.

Level 3 Needs a another shakeup at the top.

Or Jeff is sabotaging Stock price with his comments about aspiring for growth to allow for cheap first round of buybacks,

Something is wrong at Level 3

Something has always seemed to be wrong at Level 3 and it continues to this day. What else is new?

Any word on what caused yesterday’s major Level(3) outage that impacted numerous service providers?

All I’ve seen discussed is an ‘unspecified configuration error’ related to equipment in their voice NOC.

Please be patient with us as we haphazardly RIF those who are paid the most in all departments and bring in younger, cheaper talent, to address this concern. We are confident this will ensure it never happens again. And at this point, what does it matter? Opex went down, so……

As long as bonuses and stock options remained uninterrupted then all is still well with this gravy train. Shareholders be damned.
