Wednesday Bytes: Zayo, Console, RCN Business, FiberLight

Here’s a set of quick-takes from across the infrastructure sector:

Zayo has picked up a significant E-Rate contract down in Texas.  They will be providing dark fiber and 100G IP services for Texas Education Service Center Region 11, which encompasses 77 scholl districts across 10 counties around the western half of the Dallas-Fort Worth metro area.  The buildout will cover some 1,178 miles of fiber, 440 miles of which are already in the works for Zayo’s FTT buildout in the region, 443 miles of which are already in place, and 295 miles of which will be new construction.  Zayo’s Dallas expansion just keeps on picking up momentum.

Console has another data center partner for its interconnection platform.  The western colo and cloud provider Viawest and its parent Shaw are partnering with them to offer secure connectivity to the likes of Amazon AWS and Microsoft Azure.  Console aims to automate the interconnection process to a much greater degree than it has been historically, making a play for the enterprise-cloud opportunity.  Shaw and Viawest will be implementing the new connectivity options first in Calgary and then in Denver, Dallas, Portland, Las Vegas, and Phoenix.

RCN Business has launched a managed security and monitoring service.  With some help from Versa Networks, they are offering a set of cloud-based security services to their enterprise customer base, including firewalls, application-level network monitoring, and application and activity-base control of users internet access.  The addition helps fill out the company’s portfolio in an era where security seems to be on everyone’s mind.

And back in Texas, FiberLight also announced a network expansion project.  They will be adding additional low latency connectivity between its west Texas fiber network and its Dallas-Austin-San Antonio – Houston networks.  FiberLight has been fairly quiet over the last few years, but is also now expanding in South Texas.  It’s good to hear about them putting capital to work out in Texas.
